How to move Claude Code to a new Windows PC

Move repositories and supported native Windows Claude Code state as separate layers, then verify the new environment.

DIRECT ANSWER

What you need to know

Move Claude Code in two layers: clone or copy repositories through Git and normal file backup, then migrate supported native Windows Claude Code state from a verified recovery point. Reconstruct it safely on the new PC, review paths and project assumptions, sign in again, and create a fresh verified point after activation.

Before leaving the old PC

  • Push committed code and preserve important uncommitted files separately
  • Record the active Claude configuration directory and project roots
  • Create and verify a current Claude Code recovery point
  • Keep the recovery code separate from the old PC
  • Record which projects belong to native Windows and which belong to WSL

A safer new-PC sequence

  1. 01

    Install Claude Code normally

Prepare the supported native Windows environment and intended Windows user profile.

  2. 02

    Restore repositories separately

Clone or copy original project files through their normal trusted path.

  3. 03

    Recover supported state

Recover the verified Calmbu point to a separate safe location before changing the live Claude directory.

  4. 04

    Review project paths

Confirm that recovered session assumptions point to the intended repositories on the new PC.

  5. 05

    Sign in again

Use the normal Claude Code authentication flow instead of moving backed-up credentials.

  6. 06

    Establish a new point

After the new environment is confirmed, create a fresh recovery-tested backup.

Migration does not move every Claude surface

A native Windows recovery point does not claim to migrate Claude Desktop, Claude Code on the web or state owned by WSL. Treat those as separate products or environments with their own data and sign-in paths.

THE CALMBU BOUNDARY

What Calmbu currently claims

Calmbu treats Claude Code migration as recovery from a verified native Windows point. Repositories remain separate, credentials remain excluded, and the recovered workspace should be reviewed. WSL, Claude Desktop and cloud-only sessions are not part of the current migration promise.

Common questions

Will Git move all Claude Code history?

No. Git moves committed repository content, but local Claude Code transcripts, user settings and auto memory can live outside it.

Should I copy Claude credentials?

No. Sign in again on the new PC through the normal secure flow.

Can I migrate Claude Code from WSL with Calmbu?

No. The current Claude Code migration target is supported native Windows state.
